The Hypnagogic Imagery Technique (usually abbreviated to HIT) is a method of inducing lucid dreams. Using it, the dreamer must be aware throughout the transition from wakefulness to sleep. In this respect, it can be considered a branch of the more widely known Wake Initiated Lucid Dream technique.

Technique[]

  • When going to sleep, relax completely, and let your mind be as serene as the calmest sea.
  • As you begin to relax, close your eyes. Visual images will likely appear. Do not try and focus your attentions on any one of them; let them flow past you as you casually observe them.
  • As you fall deeper into the transition between wakefulness and sleeping, these images will become more complex and more similar to a dream scene.
  • These images will eventually become dynamic, vivid dream scenes. Allow yourself to passively be drawn into the dream, whilst maintaining a firm sense of awareness. Do not try so hard as to actively involve yourself in the process of being drawn into the dream, however, too little involvement may cause you to fall asleep. Hence, this is a very difficult step in the induction.
  • If successful, you should find yourself in a lucid dream.
